Review: Program 2011

Golden Mask for make-up artists

With the Golden Mask, KRYOLAN in Berlin honours make-up artists for a dedicated life’s work and for the creation of artistically significant stage, film or television make-up.

The award for German-speaking theatre goes to Harald Klute, Chief Make-up Artist of the National Theatre Mannheim. In 2002, after years of negotiations, he and his colleagues finally managed to push the state recognition of the skilled occupation “make-up artist” through.

The international prizewinner Yasushi Shimizu from Tokyo is one of the few make-up artists, who is a master in the art of Kabuki make-up. The internationally renowned expert is a much sought-after lecturer at professional schools, where he passes on his knowledge.

The award ceremony will take place in the Presentation Forum, at 4.00 pm on Sunday 20 March 2011.

German Championships for make-up artist trainees

Mask exhibition - From the theatre mask to the object

The exhibition of the make-up artist, Stephanie Hermes, shows masks, mask objects and pictures of masks, and it documents the way from the theatre mask to the object.

After meeting Donato Sartori at Centro Maschere e Strutture Gestuali in Padua, Italy in 1989, Stephanie Hermes started an in-depth study of the manufacturing of traditional leather masks and made the first leather masks of her own.

The origin of leather masks can be found in the Commedia dell´Arte, an improvisational theatre, which uses specific character types as dramatic models.

Some of the exhibited masks are in this tradition; others tread new paths of expression. Objects playing with shape and colour.

"I am exactly what you see, says the mask. And everything you fear lies underneath."
Elias Canetti
