On the occasion of the make-up artist design show (mads) in Düsseldorf on 1 and 2 April 2017 the Berlin firm KRYOLAN will be presenting the “Golden Mask for Make-Up Artists” award. The company presents this award in honour of a dedicated life’s work or the design of artistically significant stage, film or television make-up. Arnold Langer, founder of KRYOLAN, created the Golden Mask to give the achievements of German-speaking and international make-up artists the exposure that their dedication, creativity and work deserves. The award ceremony will be held at the mads Lecture Forum in Hall 7 on Saturday, 1 April 2017 at 5.15 pm.

This year the National Golden Mask award goes to Guido Paefgen. Guido Paefgen has made theatre the whole focus of his life. For him theatre means designing and toying with the varied possibilities of the stage. At the age of 20 he experienced acting in amateur theatre for the first time and in 1991 he founded his own amateur theatre in Bad Marienburg in the Westerwald. In 1995 Guido Paefgen successfully passed his make-up artistry examination. The following year saw him start his involvement at Staatstheater Mainz and at the age of just 26 he became lecturer at the make-up artistry school Maskenbildnerschule Rheinland-Pfalz. In 2000 he was appointed deputy head of make-up at Stadttheater Koblenz and in 2004 he was made head of make-up at the Staatstheater in Mainz where he still now makes his mark on the theatre season with great dedication. However, it is not just theatre that benefits from Guido Paefgen. He has also been involved in independent film and television projects such as Tatort, Germany’s Next Topmodel and Planetopia, in the German-Israeli film Playoff and the drama Ein ruhiges Leben. Guido Paefgen injects great passion into the make-up artist’s profession and is an asset to the theatre and beyond.

The International Golden Mask goes to the Briton Shaune Harrison. His career began in 1988 with Cabal – Nightbreed by Clive Barker. Here he laid the foundation for a creative career that spans two decades and comprises the top box-office blockbusters worldwide. Shaune Harrison is one of the most respected and sought after make-up artists in the field of make-up effects in the British film industry fabricating creatures and prosthetics for film and television. He made a key contribution to some of the most striking characters in film history and has worked on numerous figures for Star Wars, Stardust, The Mummy, The Fifth Element, The Da Vinci Code – Sacrilege, World War Z and Marvel Avengers: Age of Ultron.
