Already in the second year of its existence the make-up artist design show, Trade Fair for Make-up Artists, has made a name for itself in the sector. At its second edition held on 19 and 20 March 2,300 visitors came to Düsseldorf to gather information on new products and techniques, to learn from renowned experts and to meet colleagues. Director Helmut Winkler drew a satisfied conclusion: “Already in its first year the make-up artist design show was very successful. The increased international flair of the event particularly shows us that the make-up artist design show is becoming better and better known in the sector as a rewarding trade show for make-up artists. Here professionals meet with professionals and with this concept we are on exactly the right track.”

Wolfram Langer, Managing Director of the Berlin firm KRYOLAN and co-initiator of the fair, described the show as a great success: “The setting is very successful and the basic idea behind this event, not primarily intended as a sales fair but as a platform for make-up artists, is going down well. Which is why the first presentation of vocational schools proved successful and is sure to be even bigger next year.” Langer confirmed the young fair’s increased prominence in the sector and reported more visitors, especially from Scandinavian countries.

In the sector the make-up artist design show meets with unreserved approval. Regine Hergersberg, President of the German Federal Association of Make-Up Artistry (Bundesvereinigung Maskenbild e.V.) delighted at the increased size of the event: “The extended range of exhibitors offered trade visitors even more exciting impressions and information from our small but select sector. In our eyes this means more opportunities for experts to exchange ideas and do all-important networking, which is gratifying.”

Very well attended right from the first presentation the Lecture Forum featured acclaimed make-up artists presenting their work and a showcase of new techniques. In three workshops per day trade visitors were also able to try out techniques and materials themselves in the Creative Workshop under expert guidance – which met with avid interest and particularly high praise from visitors.

Bernd Uwe Staatz, Chief Make-Up Artist at the opera house Deutsche Oper am Rhein also delighted at the increased number of practical presentations and the great popularity of the creative workshop: “These practical demonstrations go down really well. It is a great fair to have. In the first place, it is proper trade fair that has once again improved in terms of setting. Here people can really talk, chat and exchange ideas with colleagues.”

Exhibitor Gernot Minke, Managing Director at Minke props from Duisburg, praised the specialist expertise of visitors: “In any case there are more decision-makers here than in London, we have the better approach for our sector here in Düsseldorf. There were good people here from many companies – from the German-speaking area including Zurich, St. Gallen, Vienna, Stuttgart and Hamburg. We held positive talks.”

The next make-up artist design show will run on 10 and 11 March 2012. Running in parallel to this will be the next BEAUTY INTERNATIONAL DÜSSELDORF from Friday to Sunday, 9 to 11 March 2012 as well as TOP HAIR INTERNATIONAL Trend & Fashion Days from Saturday to Monday, 10 to 12 March 2012.

I feel totally at home here, this is my world. The people I know with the same interests as me are all here. Thanks to the targeted approach you only get trade visitors here and this is important. The event attracts specialists who really know their stuff – which you can tell from their questions that are really detailed. The mood is very positive and people are happy there is an event of this kind in the heart of Europe. This was necessary, as we need a meeting point like this. Through the fair I was able to make many new contacts, also with international colleagues, for instance from Turkey, Spain and France. The make-up artist design show can certainly compete with the other international shows in London and Los Angeles – it is smaller but the quality is the same. This fair also shows how high the quality of make-up artistry is in Europe and Germany and this has an important impact.

Michele Guaschino, Turin
The fair is very interesting. You can see it is growing and developing further. I like the fact that the fair shows so many different aspects of the work of make-up artists, and areas like mine. I hope my field of work will become even better known through presentations like this one. I also hope to find new ideas and information myself. The audience here is good and after my lecture there were some good questions.

Stephanie Hermes, Düsseldorf
So far for me the fair has been positive, successful and with a good response. The mood is very pleasant and everyone is happy to have a forum here and meet. And the aisles slow people down because they keep getting held up in conversation. It is a really good meeting point plus lots of info – I think it is great. My expectations for post-fair business are very positive and I got lots of feedback on my work. People want to come to my workshops and I am invited by schools, it is great.

Harald Klute, Mannheim
I was delighted to see that it was possible to hold a fair like this in Germany. I like it here a lot – the event is done really well and I met lots of colleagues from other firms, there are a lot of people you know here.

Steve La Porte, Hollywood
I had a wonderful time. I enjoyed watching the other demonstrations and walked around a lot to see everything. I also went into BEAUTY and bought a few things. It’s the largest fair I’ve ever been to. The programme here at the make-up artist design show was wonderful, I only wish I’d had a bit more time to share with everyone. I liked how spread out everything was – very varied and showing many different aspects and techniques. What’s more, everything was very well organised. As someone who likes to see someone else work and walk away with something I thought it was very important to do a demonstration. This way rather than just entertainment the audience could walk away with something. I met lots of people here and made new friends. That is the great advantage of international events like this. For instance, I finally met Jos Brands and Thomas Foldberg and Morten Jacobsen in person. I’m going home with a lot of good memories from here.

Victoria Lee - Sales Manager Charles H. Fox Ltd.
People here are all professionals who ask lots of questions and are very interested. We have many international visitors here, we spoke to people from Austria, England, Spain, Serbia – from lots of countries. The fair has grown since last year. And I think it has great potential. Events like this always start small: it is like a seed. First you plant it and then it grows. It has a lot to do with word of mouth and that always takes time. Many companies wait a while when a fair is just starting out and just watch. But a fair cannot develop like that. You have to believe in it and I think the fair has the potential to grow and develop further as a really good trade event.

Bernd Maier, Managing Director Fischbach + Miller GmbH
Again this year there are lots of interested people at the make-up artist design show. The trade audience is really good here. And as only make-up artists are allowed in we have exactly the right audience we want. There are also lots of foreign visitors, especially from neighbouring countries. There were some from France and Norway and even Israel. For us this is a place to make contact with customers. The trade fair is a meeting point for make-up artists worldwide who know each other anyway. All the make-up artists confirmed that this is a great meeting place where you can gather information and meet.

Bernadette Reschberger – Make-Up Artist Bela GmbH
We like the fair very much: very many of our fellow make-up artists are here. It is amazing fun to exchange ideas here with colleagues. Visitors are a varied cross section from students to professionals and everything in between and we also have an international audience here. And everyone is really interested, we have lots to do. Make-up artists think it is great that there is an event like this in Germany at last and we see great potential in the fair.

Yasushi Shimizu, Tokyo
I find this fair very interesting. This is the first time I have seen something like this in my life! I have been to all the cosmetic fairs but I have never seen anything so specialised. I see great perspectives and possibilities.
